SURAT: A Bagalpur village resident of Tapi district was convicted of raping his mother-in-law and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment and Rs 20,000 cash fine by a local court in Vyara of Tapi district. The convict, Devendra Gamit, raped his mother-in-law on August 8, 2012 at the survivor's residence.

After a few months of their marriage, Gamit's wife left him and went to stay with her mother in Gheriyavaav. Due to Gamit's liquor addiction his wife had left him. Gamit used to thrash his wife under the influence of liquor.

To convince her to come to stay with him, Gamit visited Gheriyavaav village often.

His wife stayed in the village with her mother and brother.

On August 8, when Gamit went to meet his wife she was not present at home. Only his mother-in-law was present. Gamit was drunk when he went there. On finding his mother-in-law alone, Gamit raped her.

Gamit forcibly gagged the woman with a piece of cloth. He escaped from the location after raping her.

When the survivor's son and daughter arrived at home they took her to a hospital and a police compliant was lodged against Gamit. Police arrested Gamit and during questioning Gamit informed the police that he was angry with his mother-in-law as she encouraged his wife for separation. Gamit believed that his wife left him due to his mother-in-law. He told the police that he raped her to seek revenge.
