An armed man entered a bank in the French capital on Friday afternoon, taking four people hostage before eventually releasing them and turning himself in, police said.
The drama took place at a CIC bank branch on Avenue des Gobelins in Paris' 13th arrondissement. The suspect reportedly demanded that the state provide him and his handicapped son with subsidised housing in exchange for the hostages.
Prior to the man’s surrender, Christian Flaesch, head of Paris’ judicial police, said that the negotiations were going well.
“The negotiations are taking place in the best conditions possible,” Flaesch said at a press conference. “The situation is evolving well, calm is needed.”
A large perimeter was set up around the bank, and two teams of special police units were deployed to the scene along with a hostage negotiator.
