19-year-old delivers quadruplets in Mysore
MYSORE: After a span of a decade, a woman has delivered quadruplets at the 123-year-old Cheluvamba Hospital, which is Mysore region's oldest hospital, on Tuesday. The mother and babies are healthy.
The bundles of joy - two boys and two girls - came to 19-year-old homemaker Nandini, a resident of Kurbarahundi, Gundlupet taluk in Chamarajanagara district, through a C-section. The babies were born at 7.30am on Tuesday, a day after the Vijayadashami procession. According to doctors, one among 10 million women delivers quadruplets.
Dr B Krishnamurthy, Medical superintendent of the hospital, told TOI that the 19-year-old woman had conceived the quadruplets naturally, which is a rarity.
Nandini was admitted to hospital on Monday. Her husband Mahesh is a farmer and is overjoyed to have four kids.
"It was the first delivery of Nandini and the babies weigh between 1.1 kg and 1.5 kg. Babies are underweight but are healthy. They will be in the neonatal intensive care unit for couple of days," said Krishnamurthy. Doctor recalled that 10 years ago, a woman from rural Mysore had given birth to quadruplets.
The Cheluvamba Hospital conducts 40-45 deliveries per day in which more than 15 will be through C-section. Over 12 twins are born in the hospital per month on an average, the MD explained.
